The Beginning of the Black Hawk War

Here is some interesting information that I found, in response to a FB post from the Abraham Lincoln Book Store. On April 5, 1832, the Sauk chief Black Hawk (Mahkatêwe-meshi-kêhkêhkwa) crossed the Mississippi from Iowa into Illinois with about 1000 warriors and civilians, contrary to an earlier treaty. Although his motives have been debated by historians, his actions greatly alarmed white settlers in Illinois. Governor John Reynolds called up the state militia. The first engagement of the "Black Hawk War" was on May 14, 1832, The Battle of Stillman's Run. A detachment of 275 militiamen made a panicked retreat after being attacked by a group of Native warriors--estimated to be as few as 50 or as large as 200. The conflicts between militia and warriors lasted until Black Hawk was defeated in August. Some of my relatives participated in the conflict--James Carson, Henry Brown, Paton Pilcher, and John A. Wakefield. The war is known for participants who became famous later, like Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Winfred Scott, James Cayman, and Zachary Taylor.

Geneticist Mary F. Lyon

Influential British geneticist Mary Lyon was born on May 15, 1925!  She developed the hypothesis that one of the two X chromosomes in female mammals becomes permanently inactivated early in development, but this inactivation happens at different stages among cells. (The distinctive fur of tortie cats is a result of this phenomenon.)  Discovery of X-inactivation led to important developments in treatment of inherited diseases like certain cancers and muscular dystrophy, as well as the discovery of the non-coding RNA Xist that acts in the inactivation process. Lyon also laid the foundations for the use of mice as model organisms in molecular medicine. Lyon enrolled at Cambridge in the 1940s, a time when comparatively few women were accepted, and they only received titular degrees. Way to stick it to the patriarchy, Dr. Lyon! https://www.bbvaopenmind.com/en/science/leading-figures/mary-lyon-geneticist-discovered-women-are-cellular-mosaics/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR0Kq_qqoueGD-GHhXNHgjXSlO-ISThfyfwqotb_JZsi2uN8EbRk0Oc6aFQ_aem_AU5aOb7H5WRkmX_RDgsadOf4Q2jCH31n6gB9L2uvf7mB3RrmMaWge7uQ5sIXud-o0-n_sTxeUsZncqMmtH2Le51N

Inked!

I've been looking for an idea for a second tattoo. I wanted to get something cat-themed, maybe with a spiritual aspect broadly defined. Then, recently, we found a cute book called "Catffirmations: Mindful Mantras to Awaken Your Inner Cat." The cover was Hokusai's famous print "The Great Wave off Kanagawa," except drawn to include cats in the waves. Even Mt. Fuji in the distance has cat eyes, LOL. The always amazing artist Melissa Scherrer of Cousin Paul's Tattoos did my first tattoo in 2022 and did this one, too! She turned the image to face left, since this is my left leg. Check out her work on Instagram at honeybee.tattoos .

William Grant Still

African-American composer William Grant Still composed about five symphonies, four ballets, nine operas, over thirty choral works, plus art songs, chamber music and works for solo instruments, about 200 works in all. Called the "Dean of Afro-American Composers," he was born May 11, 1895.

Famous Comedians

These four comic actors and comedians had May 11th birthdays! I remember them from my childhood! Phil Silvers (b. 1911), Doodles Weaver (b. 1911), Foster Brooks (b. 1912), and Mort Sahl (b. 1927).

Are you going to San Francisco?

"San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair"), written by John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas, was released on this day in 1967. It reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 by the week of July 1 and stayed there for four weeks. I was just a little kid, but it's still the kind of song that can give you a good lump in your throat.

Robert Owen of New Harmony

Welsh manufacturer and social reformer Robert Owen was born May 14, 1771. He developed utopian socialist ideas--an eight-hour work day, innovative education, collective child rearing, and others--that could be implemented in experimental communities. In 1824, he moved to the U.S. and purchased the community of Harmony, Indiana which had been established in 1814 as a pietist community. Owen renamed it New Harmony. Although the "Owenist" community lasted only two years, New Harmony continued as a significant national center for the natural sciences. Beth and I enjoyed visiting New Harmony a couple years ago!

Happy birthday, President Dwight of Yale

Born May 14, 1752, Timothy Dwight was a New England Congregational minister, the oldest grandchild of theologian Jonathan Edwards. ....  In 1795, he was elected the eighth president of Yale. As president (and still a cleric) he tried to address "infidel philosophy" coming out of Britain and France. His efforts contributed to the national movement called the Second Great Awakening.... One of Dwight's faculty hires was Benjamin Silliman, among the most significant early science educators in America and the namesake of one of Yale's colleges. ... During his writing career, Dwight wrote the first epic poem by an American: "The Conquest of Canaan" (1785), in which the biblical Joshua becomes symbolic of Gen. Washington and the Revolutionary War. Unfortunately, Dwight thus continued the horrible Puritan rationalization for expelling or killing Native Americans for the sake of American destiny. ... Yale produced several pro-slavery clergyman during Dwight's presidency. Dwight himself owned one slave. It's not known if he ever freed her. In his poems, he generally supported American slavery.... He realized that college administration was harming his health, so he began a regiment of horseback riding to get himself out and about. He took notes of his travels and eventually wrote a three-volume travel book about New England  and New York. In one of his essays, he coined the term "Cape Cod houses." .... Dwight had a dream of establishing a theological school at Yale. This dream was accomplished in 1822, five years after his death, when Yale Divinity School was founded. YDS celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2022, yay! ... When I visited New Haven again last fall, I looked around the Grove Street Cemetery and found his grave--coincidentally or not, beside his presidential predecessor Ezra Stiles. Here is an online a translation of Dwight's epitaph: https://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/wm10C77_Timothy_Dwight_IV_New_Haven_CT?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR3Xpu-jDY7SdbpYLA_-kh4WHnYdhBQnAt90WwfGS8744dU7SrlV2B9rI_E_aem_AS1LB7yfIHRsfF6ovZeuRq4llykr9Xnl4eth8XiLcwhyYPrhFUFOBj4FjxVoQv-4J2RkfEM1HKAXBTpDUeTMgtSx

Benjamin Brown, 1945-1967

Born May 12, 1945, Benjamin Brown was a truck driver who participated in civil rights activities. On May 11, 1967, in Jackson, Mississippi, he was out getting a sandwich for his wife and watched a student protest taking place. Brown was shot in the back and died on his 22nd birthday the next day. Finally in 2001, a grand jury ruled that two officers, by then deceased, were to blame. Brown is listed among the SPLC's civil rights martyrs. https://www.splcenter.org/what-we-do/civil-rights-memorial/civil-rights-martyrs?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR0OyTgrr608P-bcAqnM0C5KG_2iM_ZcLsNIF-pIYbhV7tcm59ojhzURIH8_aem_AS2BcQa7pTtVsxYXi3ZCTe9uDqBeNnaM7CyiqIhFuM0RkcbMWJkiwVbD2q1vF_d3NuGHuUptHdz8KMNeagdm5zT3

Bible Families: Judah

copied under fair use principles.

I'm continuing my informal study of the Bible's genealogies--inspired by my "Adam and Eve Family Tree" that I have on my home office door.

By now, I've studied all twelve except for Judah. I had saved it till last because of its many names and lines of descent within the Bible. Of course, this is Jesus' tribe, and two of the Gospels connect his genealogy to Judah.

Genesis 29:

32 And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the Lord hath looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.

33 And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Because the Lord hath heard I was hated, he hath therefore given me this son also: and she called his name Simeon.

34 And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi.

35 And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the Lord: therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing.

Exodus 38:

1 And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

2 And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.

3 And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.

4 And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.

5 And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.

6 And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.

7 And Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord; and the Lord slew him.

8 And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.

9 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.

10 And the thing which he did displeased the Lord: wherefore he slew him also.

11 Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father's house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.

12 And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah's wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

13 And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.

14 And she put her widow's garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.

15 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.

16 And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?

17 And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?

18 And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.

19 And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

20 And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman's hand: but he found her not.

21 Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.

22 And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.

23 And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.

24 And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.

25 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.

26 And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.

27 And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.

28 And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.

29 And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.

30 And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.

3 And Moses and Eleazar the priest spake with them in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying,

40 And they found fat pasture and good, and the land was wide, and quiet, and peaceable; for they of Ham had dwelt there of old.

41 And these written by name came in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and smote their tents, and the habitations that were found there, and destroyed them utterly unto this day, and dwelt in their rooms: because there was pasture there for their flocks.

43 And they smote the rest of the Amalekites that were escaped, and dwelt there unto this day.

Here is a list of the monarchs of Israel and of Judah. Of course, the Judahite kings were of the house of David.

9 And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias;

10 And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias;

11 And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:

12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel;

13 And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;

14 And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;

15 And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;

16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.

As does Luke's:

3:23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,

24 Which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Janna, which was the son of Joseph,

27 Which was the son of Joanna, which was the son of Rhesa, which was the son of Zorobabel, which was the son of Salathiel, which was the son of Neri,

28 Which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Addi, which was the son of Cosam, which was the son of Elmodam, which was the son of Er,

29 Which was the son of Jose, which was the son of Eliezer, which was the son of Jorim, which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi,

30 Which was the son of Simeon, which was the son of Juda, which was the son of Joseph, which was the son of Jonan, which was the son of Eliakim,

31 Which was the son of Melea, which was the son of Menan, which was the son of Mattatha, which was the son of Nathan, which was the son of David,

32 Which was the son of Jesse, which was the son of Obed, which was the son of Booz, which was the son of Salmon, which was the son of Naasson,

33 Which was the son of Aminadab, which was the son of Aram, which was the son of Esrom, which was the son of Phares, which was the son of Juda,

34 Which was the son of Jacob, which was the son of Isaac, which was the son of Abraham, which was the son of Thara, which was the son of Nachor,

35 Which was the son of Saruch, which was the son of Ragau, which was the son of Phalec, which was the son of Heber, which was the son of Sala,

36 Which was the son of Cainan, which was the son of Arphaxad, which was the son of Sem, which was the son of Noe, which was the son of Lamech,

37 Which was the son of Mathusala, which was the son of Enoch, which was the son of Jared, which was the son of Maleleel, which was the son of Cainan,

38 Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.

Unusual Clouds

This popped up on my Facebook memories from last year. We went to a wonderful Gorlok Awards event down in Fenton, MO. As we were leaving, we noticed these unusual clouds. The Channel 5 meteorologist called them mammatas clouds that sometimes form on the bottom of cumulonimbus clouds when the air is unstable.

Mordecai Anielewicz and the Warsaw Uprising, 81 Years Ago

 Born in 1919, Mordecai Anielewicz was a Polish Jew who led Jewish resistance to the Nazis as deportations of the Warsaw Ghetto commenced. He was the leader of the Jewish Fighting Organization (Żydowska Organizacja Bojowa) and urged the building of bunkers and the acquisition of weapons. When Nazis returned in January 1943, the ŻOB responded with a sufficiently effective force to cause the Germans to withdrew, at least until April, when they returned with 2000 troops. This, too, was met with a Jewish defensive force until the Nazi's located and gassed the ŻOB bunker on May 8, 1943. Anielewicz is presumed to have died that day. Here is a good Yad Vashem article about the uprising: https://www.yadvashem.org/articles/general/the-warsaw-ghetto-uprising.html?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR2DEIsdJgWhBBmQUhMhDNTHCIX1k2mgLBeKoVRBOj5X8Y0OS-_AJK57vIs_aem_AYj8XJM3O47N_YWjDQ-2xzj4HuXZ-CIeIjpAmKdnJ18CHwsVuj5jrwsVjQvuWkZ7nLst9-lrraWD63siUViy0088

200 Years of Beethoven's Ninth

Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium...” Beethoven's Ninth Symphony premiered on this day in 1824, in Vienna. Some of us remember when the NBC evening news ended with the scherzo of the Ninth. I didn't realize that the symphony is considered revolutionary in the symphonic form because the four movements are each coherent pieces on their own. The use of timpani at the beginning of the scherzo, and their tuning at the interval of an octave, were among the symphony's other innovations. Interestingly, some of the choral writing has been criticized as awkward, as Verdi noted--but as Verdi also noted, it's Beethoven, so it's hard to fuss. The humanitarian message and joyful delivery of the chorus

Seid umschlungen, Millionen!

Diesen Kuß der ganzen Welt!

Brüder, über’m Sternenzelt

Muß ein lieber Vater wohnen.

Be embraced, Millions!

This kiss to all the world!

Brothers, above the starry canopy

There must dwell a loving Father.

have made the symphony a perennial anthem and piece of celebration.

Bishop Whipple's Justice Work

"Henry Benjamin Whipple, the first Episcopal bishop of Minnesota, is known for his missionary work among the Dakota and Ojibwe and his efforts to reform the U.S. Indian administration system. After the U.S.–Dakota War of 1862, Whipple was one of the few white men to oppose the death sentences of 303 Dakota." https://www.mnopedia.org/person/whipple-henry-benjamin-1822-1901#:~:text=Henry%20Benjamin%20Whipple%2C%20the%20first,Indian%20administration%20system

As that site indicates, he continued to work for the growth of the Episcopal Church in Minnesota and also on behalf of Native Americans.

Here is a book he owned, about the colonial wars of the 1670s.
