This month I'll try to keep in mind and prayer Muslims who are observing the Ramadan fast. The holy month is described in this article:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/07/ramadan-2013-facts_n_3529135.html?utm_hp_ref=religion In Ramadan, the ninth month on the Islamic (lunar) calendar, most Muslims abstain from water and food from dawn to sunset. A predawn meal is allowed, and a sunset meal (Iftar) is shared with friends and family. The fast itself is called Sawm and is one of Islam's five pillars.
I'm ashamed to say I can't imagine undertaking such a rigorous fast, although I do occasionally skip a meal for religious devotional purposes and should do so more often.
Here is a recent article about Ramadan around the world.
