Happy 450th, William Laud

William Laud was born October 7, 1573---450 years ago. He was a Church of England bishop appointed Archbishop of Canterbury by Charles I in 1633.  He advocated rule by bishops (episcopalianism, "high church" liturgy, uniformity of belief, and other reforms advocated by Charles. He disagreed with the traditional Calvinism within the church, upholding Arminianism instead (thus rejecting predestination). These and other events made him controversial among both traditional Anglicans and Puritans. Laud was executed for treason in 1645 during the English Civil War.
