Mary Ann Shadd Cary Bicentennial


Mary Ann Shadd Cary was born October 9, 1823---200 years. She was the first black woman publisher in North American and the first black woman to attend law school in the U.S. She edited The Provincial Freeman, participated in the Underground Railroad, and recruited black soldiers for the Union army. After the war she advocated for civil rights for African Americans and for women.
